History

In 1945 the North Carolina General Assembly, recognizing a need to assist veterans, created the North Carolina Veterans Commission by unanimous vote. The 1967 General Assembly changed the name of the agency to the North Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1973, the agency became part of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and was re-designated the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs.

FUNCTION and ORGANIZATION

The North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs (NCDVA) provides a system to assist veterans and their families in the presentation and processing of claims as they may be entitled to under Federal, State or local laws. This statewide network of offices is maintained and staffed by persons who are trained and experienced in advising and actively assisting citizens concerning various veterans’ benefits.

Polk County is proud to provide that assistance to veterans who have honorably served their country through our NCDVA certified County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO). The CVSO, while employed by the County Commissioners, is trained by and works under the supervision of a NCDVA District Service Officer (DSO).

The CVSO provides on-site counseling and assistance to local veterans and their dependents of their rights and entitlements under various laws. He assists the veterans and their families in the preparation of claims, obtaining supporting documents and affidavits, and forwarding  the paperwork  to a NCDVA DSO for quality review and submission to the appropriate Government entity. This system ensures that veterans and their dependent families are getting accurate information and quality assistance with claims through State trained and certified Officers.

If you have questions concerning eligibility for benefits, desire to submit a claim, or require assistance with any other aspect involving veterans benefits, contact the Polk County CVSO listed below
